Inversion of Wind and Temperature from Low SNR FPI Interferograms

The temperature and wind in the middle upper atmosphere can be obtained by recording Doppler shift broadening of airglow emission, which is reflected interference ring from a ground-based Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) system. FPI observations are highly susceptible to weather external environment, seriously affect signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) interferograms. An SNR significantly increase errors determining center interferogram, leading inaccurate inversions. calculation shows that inversion interferogram decreases increases for larger central errors. In this paper, we propose maximum standard deviation method (MSDM) with high accuracy robustness determine center. performance MSDM better achieved using more than 100 1D bins investigated computing numerous simulated interferograms white Gaussian noise Poisson noise, compared two algorithms binarization peak fitting, usually used invert FPI. results show has higher other algorithms. We also simulate distortion when may illuminated inhomogeneous background light, introduce additional temperature, still performs better. Finally, real Kelan (38.7°N, 111.6°E) FPI, both inverted agree well product Therefore, helps improve stability temperature.
